All About RSS Feeds

What is an RSS Feed?

“Really Simple Syndication” or RSS is a family of web feed formats (ATOM is another one that can be used with MoFuse). These feeds are used to publish frequently updated web content such as blog entries, news headlines, audio, and video – really any content on your website could be put into an RSS feed.

Web feeds exist because they let publishers easily distribute or “syndicate” their content automatically. They benefit readers who want to subscribe to timely updates from websites or to aggregate feeds from many sites into one place. If you use an RSS feed on your mobile site, you can be confident that your mobile readers will have all of the latest updated info when they go to your mobile site. You don’t have to do anything- it auto updates to the mobile site.

If I don’t have an RSS Feed, how can I get one?

Any web page today can be made to generate an RSS feed automatically.
Thanks to new “html scraping” services available to everyone, RSS feeds can be automatically generated for just about any web site, no matter what kind of layout, coding or language it is written in. In some situations, to create a standard RSS feed from any web page that does not have one may take less than a minute, while in other cases, where your needs for customization are higher, you may need to spend a little more time.

Keeping My Site Up to Date

Do I have to have an RSS Feed to build a mobile site with MoFuse?

No, you don’t! You can still build a sophisticated site with a logo, and multiple pages including text, images, dynamic weather forecasts, and contact information such as a map, directions and click-to-call, and more. However, if you do have information that changes frequently, such as news updates or events, you may want to consider creating RSS feeds so that your mobile site will update automatically.

What do I have to do to keep my mobile site up-to-date?

This is an important thing to think about when you are setting up your site. Frankly, if the content from your PC based site will be changing regularly, you will want to use RSS feeds on  your site. That way when anything changes on the PC web site it will auto update on your mobile site.

How frequently does my mobile site update?

We regularly check your feeds and ensure that the latest information is updated on your mobile site. Typically, your mobile site will update every 15 minutes, and usually within even less time than that, depending upon the amount of traffic being received to your site.

Does a MoFuse Site Work On All Phones?

What phones will my MoFuse mobile site work on?

The short answer: all of them. We also offer special mobile site versions that optimize the experience for iPhone or Android. One of our most important values is to make sure that your mobile site delivers the best possible experience on every mobile device, allowing you to reach everyone that visits from a mobile.

Will my MoFuse built site work on portable devices, other than phones?

Yes – as a matter of fact your mobile site will look great on the Kindle as well as on a Sony Playstation portable. As time goes on, there will be more and more mobile devices that are not necessarily telephones accessing the mobile web. There is no better time than now to build a single site that can be accessed by netbooks as well as all other portable devices.

Driving Traffic To My MoFuse Mobile Site

Is there a way to automatically direct people to my mobile site when they type in my desktop URL into their mobile device?

Yes! You can easily set up an “auto redirect” by dropping in code that we supply you. MoFuse provides this code for every site that is created. All you need to do is copy and paste the code to the top of the index file of your standard, PC-based website. What this code does is automatically detect if the visitor coming to your website is coming from a mobile device, and if so, they will then be automatically redirected to the mobile site.

If you have ever gone to a large news organization, for example, CNN.com from your mobile device, you know how this works as you instantly arrive not on their standard site, but on their mobile site instead.

To use this feature, you do need to have access to your standard site’s index file to install the code. It isn’t difficult and is the best way to promote your site and provide an optimal experience for your mobile visitors.

MoFuse provides auto-detect and redirect code in three languages: php, jsp, asp, and asp.net.
